Dear Friend of Carver,
I am so grateful that you are considering helping to meet one of the greatest needs in the African American community today – the equipping of African-American leaders. I believe that God preordained you visit to our website that we may partner together in this service. Thank you for the opportunity to share this campaign with you. It frames our request for support and expresses our desire to cultivate a relationship with you.
As you may know, we have successfully completed the accreditation process with full acceptance into the Association for Biblical Higher Education (www.abhe.org). As we continue to settle into our new campus, we are repositioning the College to perfect our academic program offerings and retain quality faculty and staff in order to attract more students. To that end, we have experienced a 46% increase in enrollment and are on pace for a 75% increase for the 08-09 school year. This tremendous accomplishment is attributed to our accreditation, new location, and the outstanding work of a dedicated team.
None of these major milestones of success for Carver could have been reached without the prayers and support from friends like you who are committed to our mission and current objectives. We feel that our organizational ‘foundation’ has been dug and laid and that it is solid. The College now has the infrastructure in place to actively market its programs and educational resources to a broader audience. We are on course to train hundreds more emerging leaders who will serve the church and reach the world for Christ.
Should you agree to partner with us, it will not be taken lightly. After your careful review, I look forward to answering any additional questions you may have. It is with faith and the confidence of God’s calling to this institution that I boldly ask you to join me. I am assured that, together, our commitment will attract thousands of others to stand with us as we reposition Carver Bible College to realize its fullest potential. Thanks in advance for your prayerful consideration.
Sincerely,
Robert W. Crummie
President
CARVER BIBLE COLLEGE
Carver Bible College (CBC) President Robert Crummie believes if we effectively equip emerging African American leaders with biblical truth and effective ministry skills, they will go and reach (make more disciples) the African American community. In short, he believes that one of the biggest needs in the African American community today is to produce more leaders who have character, a clear biblical word view, and effective ministry and leadership skills. CBC is addressing this need.
MISSION OF CARVER BIBLE COLLEGE
“Training to Transform”
CBC exists to “glorify God by training men and women in biblical truth to serve the church and reach the world for Christ.” CBC is one of four Bible colleges in the United States that are fully accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (www.abhe.org) that have African American leadership and primarily targets the African American community. There are more than 500 Bible colleges in North American. Unlike the 113 historically black colleges, CBC’s mission is solely dedicated to equipping emerging leaders to fulfill the great commission. Our fully accredited Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies curriculum focuses on three main areas in order to develop leaders who will make an impact for Christ in the African American community and around the world:
- Knowledge of the Scriptures
- Character development
- Equipping with effective ministry skills
History of Carver Bible College
Graduates of Moody Bible Institute, Grace and Talmage Payne served with China Inland Missions for sixteen years, and while home on furlough, WWII began and they were unable to renew their visa and return to China. The Lord showed them the lack of biblical and theological depth in the African American community, led them to come south and use their skills and ministry experience to duplicate the higher biblical education they enjoyed at Moody among African Americans. With $35 in hand, they acquired a two-room building rental agreement and began the first classes at Carver Bible Institute on October 17, 1943. That initial course was comprised of 14 students eager to study God’s Word and prepare for ministry. The college relocated five years later to 15 Haynes Street and afterwards purchased moved the college to 2.5 acres at 437 Nelson Street where the college had been a fixture for close to five decades. Today CBC exists on a sprawling 16 acre campus at 3870 Cascade Road, still in Southwest, Atlanta. In 1988, an athletic program was launched and the Carver Cougars men’s basketball program began their first season playing in the National Christian College Athletic Association. In February 2006, CBC was awarded full accreditation with the Association of Biblical Higher Education. Currently, CBC has over 450 graduates serving the Body of Christ worldwide. Our vision is to continue equipping scores of ethnic and minority men and women to live, apply and teach biblical truth such that communities, cultures and even entire nations are impacted and transformed for Christ for generations to come.
Leadership of Carver Bible College
CBC has been guided by some of the most effective leaders our society has produced. Succeeding our first president Dr. Talmage Payne was our current Chancellor, Dr. William Hungerpiller, a key player in the framing of Carver. Successive presidents include Dr. Vardrey Fleming, Dr. Anthlone Wade and current president Robert W. Crummie. President Crummie is a native of Washington, DC. He’s a graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, SC and Dallas Theological Seminary and is currently completing his doctoral dissertation at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary just north of Boston. In 1996 Rev. Crummie was recruited to serve as Vice President for Advancement Affairs at CBC and four years later asked to serve as the college’s fifth president. President Crummie also serves as Moderator of the Metropolitan Baptist Association within the National Baptist Convention, USA, and on the Poor and Needy subcommittee of the National Christian Foundation. He has also served on the boards of The Evangelical Alliance Mission (TEAM) and Next Exit. President Crummie was married to the former Cheryl Roseanne Jacks of Fort Worth, Texas, who went to be with the Lord on December 18, 2004. They have one 6-year-old son, Robert II, a 1st grade student at the Atlanta Youth Academy.

Strategic Repositioning Directives
- Secure in advance, the annual fund portion of the operating budget for the remaining academic and fiscal year July1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. - $640,000
- Eliminate the costs associated with accomplishing accreditation - $900,000
- Secure in advance, the annual fund portion of the operating budget for the academic and fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009 - $960,000
- Acquire the adjacent 16 acres for the College’s future expansion and growth - $1.4 million.
Our greatest challenge in order to achieve these goals is fiscal in nature. Large portions of our operating funds have been stagnated by the financial rippling effects of accreditation. In order to begin the new academic year with a balanced fiscal platform, we must be able to satisfy all costs associated with accomplishing accreditation. We successfully raised $1.3 million last fiscal year in light of a $1.6 million dollar operating budget, but there is still a gap. To close out this calendar year in the black, the College needs an additional $900,000 to cover this year’s budget gap carried forward from last year: $640,000 for the remaining ’07-’08 operating budget; $1.4 million for the purchase of the adjacent 16 acres; and $960,000 for ’08-’09 operating budget. We will then begin the ’09-’10 school year and every year thereafter, with the need to raise only $640,000 (40% donations towards our $1.6 million budget) and the following year with the need to raise only $320,000 (20% of the $1.6 million budget in donations). As our enrollment increases, our dependency upon donations will decrease. Without exception, we will diligently prospect and solicit the necessary funding to sustain the College’s operations for years to come as a result of having right-sized the College’s economics.
Anticipated Outcomes of the Achieving the Strategic Repositioning Directives
- Having transformed our budget to be majority supported by tuition and fess instead of donor gifts.
- Establish, maintain and implement
- the educational programs and academic support services required to carry out the mission.
- The student support services required to carry out the mission.
- A program of research and public service to carry out the mission
- An institutional effectiveness program
- Obtain:
- the quantity and quality of facilities, equipment, software, and other educational resources required to achieve the mission.
- Sufficient financial resources to implement the College mission.
- Develop and enhance beneficial private and public partnerships and relations to support the mission.
- Maintain high quality management.
